Checkered Legend. In the Congo, only curt mention of his death was made. Tshombe had been largely a non-person since his exile in 1965. The son of a millionaire trader, Tshombe emerged on the world stage when the Congo became an independent country. Patrice Lumumba, the Congo's charismatic first Premier, wanted strong central government. Tshombe, speaking for the copper-rich province of Katanga, demanded a loose federation. ...return to the circus takes Lola backstage to her dressing room, a cage behind which pass actors staging her childhood. The camera follows them back and forth, passing in the middle of each are the sick, static Lola, and provoking a second flashback. In it Lola, a child still mourning her father's death, accompanies her mother aboard ship only to discover her affair with an officer. The sweeping camera movements which follow this child through the ship and express her curiosity and longing, ironically stress the objects and walls that confine her movement through the cramped lower deck...
...conventional jazz. Phil Woods' European Rhythm Machine seems to be the frame for his alto virtuosity that he has been looking for. Woods by no means carries the group, as several bass, piano, and drum solos demonstrated. Bassist Eddie Young of Young-Holt Unlimited has a good time on stage, too--so did we. The Bill Evans group by itself is a good jazz combo; it becomes great when Jeremy Steig walks on stage to add his lyrical flute. And the guitar of Kenny Burrell was--as it always has been--very fine...
