...what extent can the anger of adolescence be traced to changes going on in the brain at this stage of life? There's a lot of explanations that circle about as to why adolescents are angry. There's the neurological argument, the hereditary argument. Some parents look at their teenage son and say, What have I done? There must be something that I really stuffed up in his childhood for him to be acting this way. The problem with all these explanations is that, while they might have some validity, all of them render the parents powerless to do anything...

...bombing of a revered shrine in Samarra in early 2006. As a result, Sadr, a mere cleric, towered as the most powerful Shi'ite figure in Iraq, eclipsing the more senior Sistani's prestigious status as ayatollah. Sistani became a voice in the wings on Iraq's political stage as the country's armed factions, including the U.S. military, warred through 2006 and 2007. Now with the situation quieter, and Sadr politically weakened following his military clash with Maliki, Sistani seems poised to renew a larger political role for himself...

...gentle 2004 approach teach the Clintons to be more aggressive? Maybe. That year, someone else, namely John Edwards, was chosen (and, once more, he is not that far from center stage this campaign season.) Anyway, given what happened before, and given the stakes this time, all that made me wonder if the Clintons decided to try a different strategy this time around. If they intend to succeed, I'm betting the Clintons will soon dial back their push and take the quieter, high road approach - if they haven't already...

...behind-the-scenes master of ceremonies. In Leaving, for example, he includes himself in the play not as a character but as a kind of chorus. Interlaced throughout the script are comments about the creative process which director David Radok has Havel himself voice as the actors freeze on stage. The effect is odd, at first but, in the end adds a fitting layer of ironic detachment. Characteristically, Havel's main stage direction during the play is to tell his actors not to overact. On opening night, in the final scene, after the cast exits back stage on a elevator...
