...marry as teenagers; Curtis joins the band and, while on tour, begins an affair with an exotic Belgian, leaving Debbie at home to take care of their baby and work two jobs. Racked with guilt at his own infidelity, Curtis' torment is compounded by epileptic fits - often on stage - and a fear of the additional responsibilities of looming success. Joy Division songs such as Love Will Tear Us Apart, heavy with Curtis' anguish and sense of isolation, are framed eloquently in context. And by having the actors perform the music themselves rather than mime to originals, Corbijn captures the energy...

...assignments came from an American women's magazine. In September 1994, when Cairo was hosting a U.N. population conference, CNN aired footage of the backstreet genital mutilation of a young Egyptian girl. Egypt's conservatives claimed that CNN and the girl's family had shamed Egypt on the world stage. A year on, I was to find the girl and do an update. ...detect and treat the disease, especially in the Third World, where resources may be woefully lacking. There are 3.5 million women in the Indian city of Pune, and there is one comprehensive breast-care facility there. In South Africa only 5% of breast cancers are caught in their earliest stage. In the U.S. it's 50%. In Kenya, a woman with the disease may have no hope at all unless she can travel elsewhere for treatment. "You just sit and wait for your death," Mary Onyango, a Kenyan breast-cancer patient, told Time. Her story and those of many others...
