Several of the Army's six major CBW installations have almost pastoral settings where game abounds and Boy Scouts come to camp and hike. The serene surroundings belie the research being conducted at these sites. At Fort Detrick, diseases are developed in laboratories with long stainless-steel and sealed-glass cabinets, many bearing stenciled nicknames like "African Queen" and "Tribulation Row." Fertilized eggs enter the labs in compartmented trays and move through the cabinets on conveyor belts.
