Meanwhile, Bill's career hit a few snags. He was soon typed as "the boy next door," a sort of "Smiling Jim" whose whole-wheat charm went quickly stale. His private life, however, took a turn for the better. He met a young actress named Brenda Marshall (real name: Ardis Ankerson). One Saturday night Bill and Ardis flew to Las Vegas and got married. Eight months later Bill enlisted in the Army Air Forces, and for the better part of four years, except for occasional leaves, he was away from home, mostly with entertainment and P.R. units in Connecticut...

...fight fans were impressed. Champion Bobo Olson, 27, was far from a tiger. Sugar himself had beaten the balding Hawaiian beach boy twice in the past; Light-Heavyweight Champion Archie Moore took Bobo apart last summer. But at 35, Sugar seemed stale and slow. His comeback so far had been unimpressive; in January he was beaten by a clumsy trial horse, Tiger Jones. "I've had to come a long way," he admitted himself, "a lot further than people believe. Scene follows scene without shift; past follows present follows past as sun follows shadow on a dappled day. As Joan strides through her story, the lights minister her mood and clothe her in whatever...

...deeply regret this state of things. For without competition the game goes stale, and the ingenuity of youth lies dormant. This will inevitably lead to the decay of capitalism, individualism, religion, and even the very future of Western Civilization. Accordingly, we welcome any parody, or for that matter, any other sign of life from Princeton. If the Princetonians will show us some spirit, we will show them their flag...
