MARCELL: Growing up I would always have breakfast at Kupat Tahu Gempol, tel: (62-22) 426 0809. This food stall has been serving its famous dish of tofu and peanut sauce since 1965 and now has four other stands around the city, but the same woman still works at the original location, which is down the road from my old house. Just around the block is one of the city's best boutiques, God Incorporated, tel: (62-22) 423 2308. It sells locally made clothing and other gear, and belongs to the members of Koil, Bandung's legendary metal band...
...sweeter kind, like beras kencur, made with kencur root and rice powder. It's good for beginners and not as bitter or medicinal as the jamu more experienced drinkers enjoy. For lunch, I've always loved Warung Nasu Ibu Eha, tel: (62-22) 426 2745, a little food stall deep in the heart of Pasar Cihapit, one of the city's oldest markets. Some 4,000 British troops have been hunkered down at the Basra airport after turning the city over to Iraqi forces last year. So far they have not been drawn from their base into this week's fighting there...
...should probably steer clear of everything but the final track and lead single “Honey.” The 11-song album doesn’t give listeners anything to play while jogging on a Sunday afternoon or standing idly in a steamy shower stall. Instead, chant-like singing and eerie electronic sounds mixed with syncopated drumbeats are used to reinforce Badu’s politically charged lyrics. While the album successfully provokes listeners, it sacrifices some musical quality to its political aims. The “New Amerykah” cover art serves as a blaring warning...
...outside world, the concert might appear to be aimed, as Maazel put it, at bringing "peoples and their cultures together on common ground, where the roots of peaceful interchange can imperceptibly take hold." Skeptics, like Bolton, believe Kim will simply use that perception to stall for more time, and ultimately not live up to what he has agreed to do: give the outside world chapter and verse about his nuclear weapons programs, past and present...
