Born in Dublin, Hassan is married to an Iraqi, holds British, Irish and Iraqi citizenship and has lived in Iraq for more than 30 years. She has been a critic of sanctions over the years and a stalwart leader, before and during the war, of efforts to improve the country's faltering water, health and education systems. A few months before the war began, Hassan told TIME the sanctions against Iraq had helped create "a dependent society with little or no ability to improve its situation."
