...Terence plays The Limey, I play the Slimey," Peter Fonda chuckles. He speaks of his latest role opposite Terence Stamp in Steven Soderbergh's new film. It's true-slick and once-successful Terry Valentine dirties his hands with drug smuggling and even murder to preserve his comfortable Hollywood Hills lifestyle. On the other hand, Fonda's performance paints the villain ambiguously, making despicable Valentine likeable and ultimately pitiable...
...Limey, director Stephen Soderbergh (sex, lies and videotape, Out of Sight) challenges genre by remolding the "revenge film" as a neo-noir. English ex-convict Wilson (Terence Stamp) flies to Los Angeles after his prison release to avenge his daughter Jenny's death. Starting with the facts and speculations offered by her friend Ed (Luis Guzman), Wilson stalks a string of criminals he believes are responsible for her mysterious and fatal car crash, eventually confronting high profile 60s record producer Terry Valentine (Peter Fonda). The past two years at Harvard had mostly been spent writing papers and launching my body at other guys in helmets and pads--two things that don't bode well for memory retention...
...evidence taken at some point? In rape cases semen is generally recovered, and in murder cases there is often hair or skin evidence. But some samples come from less obvious sources: in the World Trade Center bombing case, DNA was recovered from saliva on the back of a postage stamp. And does this evidence still exist? The project has to reject about 70% of the cases that come to it because evidence was lost or destroyed or is otherwise unavailable. Finally, is there a viable theory of innocence? If prosecutors had fingerprints placing the defendant at the crime scene...
