...loves an underdog, and the Twins were once the Washington Senators, who won only once, in 1924. Shades of Walter Johnson, and all that. But then, I could also see pulling for the Cards. They were among the original eight of my youth, and I have a Bowman 1948 Stan Musial card now worth more than a hundred bucks (thank God I didn't throw that set out with the rest of the shoebox). So, now that the time has come I'm there, rejoicing or dying for my newly rationalized champions...

...light from supernovas is expected to peak quickly and then decline. But 1987A's brightness rose, then leveled off, then increased again, peaking around May 22, when it was easily visible to the naked eye. Since then it has been gradually dimming. One possible explanation was proposed by Astronomer Stan Woosley of the University of California at Santa Cruz. He suggests that the decay of radioactive elements within 1987A's cloud of debris is now generating the light. If he is right, gamma-ray emissions from decaying cobalt 56 should start showing up this summer. Concedes Woosley...

...carrying a high-powered rifle, a shotgun, a handgun and a bag of ammunition, and headed for a nearby shopping mall in Palm Bay, Fla. (pop. 45,000). He opened fire through the plate-glass windows of a crowded Winn Dixie supermarket and an adjacent jewelry shop. Stan Graybush, 45, was near a check-out line inside the Winn Dixie. "I heard boom boom boom," he said. "I yelled, 'Get on the floor!' There must have been 50 people running in all different directions...

...Mattingly's many offensive accomplishments in his first four years have led several to compare him to such legends as Stan Musial, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig. Mattingly has already snagged an MVP award, a batting title and an RBI title--something no player has done in his first three full seasons. In 1986, Mattingly led the American League in hits, doubles and slugging percentage. Perhaps even more amazing is that Mattingly struck out only 35 times in 677 at bats. Yet, the Yankees first baseman was not first in this category. In fact, he finished third behind...

...says Astronomer Stan Woosley of the University of California at Santa Cruz, "everyone with anything to look with is looking at it." Every optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere is trained on 1987A; a newly launched Japanese satellite is scanning it for X rays emitted by the supernova's hot gases; the Solar Max satellite is looking for the gamma rays characteristic of very energetic explosions; and another spacecraft, the International Ultraviolet Explorer, has already made observations of the explosion's ultraviolet radiation. These indicate that the star's atmosphere, which astronomers have determined is exploding outward at a speed...
