Mass Attack. The volume of results piled up at Berkeley is impressive. Much of it consists of data on hundreds of radioactive elements created by bombarding almost all the 92 standard elements-what projectile was used, what energy, how quickly the artificial radiation subsides, what it consisted of. In altering atomic structures, Dr. Lawrence has even created a few atoms of gold, thus technically at least realizing the old dream of the alchemists. But the raw material for this transmutation was platinum, and the few gold atoms were not worth a fraction of the energy used in manufacturing them, although...
...seen. In the process he establishes Irene Dunne as one of the top comediennes of current cinema, keeps Columbia's reputation for mature comedy (It Happened One Night, Mr. Deeds Goes To Town, Theodora Goes Wild) at its brightest. He also has his say on divorce, the double standard...
Clara Mortensen was defending the "championship" which she claims to hold among the 60 women professionals now adays engaged in trying to revive what was once a standard U. S. sport. So far this year Buick dealers, according to Bill Hufstader, have netted twice as much money as last. Makers are cagey about mentioning dealer profits, but Buick dealers probably average about $78 net for every $1,000 in sales, not counting a 20% reserve for used...
...Automobile Show proper. This week his debutante was on view on upper Broadway with enough changes to startle all comers. For the first time since 1908 Ford is offering two models unlike in appearance and interior appointments. Last year's Fords came as the V-8 standard or de luxe, almost identical save in power. The new de luxe model looks like the 1938 Lincoln Zephyr (see below), has a hood that curves down over the grille in a pronounced "widow's peak." The new standard is more like the 1937 type, but has greater flow in lines...
