...right, of course. He is good as the star-struck hero in Close Encounters, but he is nothing short of wonderful as Elliott Garfield, the brash but vulnerable actor in Goodbye Girl. In fact, the character is so like the real-life Dreyfuss that Simon would have saved everyone some trouble by just calling him Rick in the first place. The part was so natural, admits Rick himself, that "I could have done it as a 9-to-5 job for the rest of my life. Imagine! Sixty years old and still shooting The Goodbye Girl...

Nureyev's Valentino is mostly a credible performance, but he is no nascent film star. No glaring flaws scar his rendition of the silent film idol; he delivers a convincing Italian accent, and the spectacle of star-struck women clustering about this Valentino is plausible. The script wisely makes use of Nureyev's awesome talents on a dance floor at several stages, and the opportunity to watch him glide through tangos briefly takes one's mind off the film's many lesser moments. "Drinkin', that's my way of prayin'," he would say. Shor was a star-struck sports fan, and his friends ranged from the Duke of Windsor to Joe DiMaggio, from Chief Justice Earl Warren to Mobster Frank Costello. Generous and impulsive, he once dropped more than $60,000 on a World Series bet, and would carry down-and-out customers on the cuff...
