Poor Little Rhode Island. The Colonel once imperiously read Rhode Island out of the Union for packing its supreme court with Democrats, and ordered a star (Rhode Island's, that is) taken out of the flag in the Tribune lobby. When a deskman suggested that defacing the flag might be illegal, the Colonel had him call the Tribune's attorneys, and stood by for their ruling. Out of the receiver came the lawyer's anguished squawk, loud enough for the Colonel to hear: "Now who in hell wants to cut a star out of the flag...
...stories. George L. Berry, president of the A.F.L. pressmen's union, had sent a telegram to his St. Louis local, ordering it to drop its plan for a slowdown strike. When the pressmen discovered a story about Boss Berry's decision in the afternoon Post-Dispatch and Star-Times they pulled the pressroom switches and walked out, right in the middle of the press run. After a five-hour walkout, union leaders, aware of the evil implications of such press censorship, talked the pressmen into going back-but too late for the rest of that...
...Guiding Star. Last year some new evidence turned up. Dr. H. W. Babcock of Mt. Wilson Observatory, Calif, performed the unlikely feat of measuring (by spectrum analysis) the magnetic field of the star called 78 Virginis. When Professor Blackett heard about it, he grabbed pencil & paper. The star's size, mass and speed of revolution could be estimated fairly accurately. Nothing more was needed. The magnetic field of remote 78 Virginis just about proved what theorizing had already predicted: it was closely proportionate to the magnetic fields of the earth...
...told me there were only two people who could play a Mozart concerto-and he was one of them. Wild horses won't drag the other name from me. . . . The combination of my wife and myself is one that cannot be duplicated in 24 hours." Quipped the London Star, in a cartoon next day: "I have got tickets for Sir Thomas Beecham's next speech. I hear he will also conduct some music." Impresario Fielding resigned in a huff...
