...computing projects like SETI@home, which hunts for radio signals that might indicate intelligent life in the universe, and ClimatePrediction.net, which tests the accuracy of global climate models, have long tapped volunteers' home computers to help process data. The difference between these projects and Galaxy Zoo - and its inspiration, Stardust@home, which asks volunteers to search electron-microscope images for interstellar dust particles collected in space - is that the latter two interface with not the volunteer's PC but with his or her mind...

...every ambitious American director wanted to do his own 8-1/2. That license may have been issued a bit cavalierly - self-referential cinema, as it was called, could easily turn self-reverential - but it spawned some fascinating films, including Paul Mazursky's Alex in Wonderland, Woody Allen's Stardust Memories and above all Bob Fosse's All That Jazz, a collision of song and dance, skyrocketing neurosis and open-heart surgery, energy and entropy. DIED The inspiration for Robert De Niro's character in Martin Scorsese's Casino, Frank (Lefty) Rosenthal ran four Las Vegas casinos in the 1970s and was labeled "the greatest living expert on sports gambling" by SPORTS ILLUSTRATED. Head of the Stardust, Fremont, Hacienda and Marina casinos, he was famous for his alleged ties to the Mob. After surviving an attempt on his life, Rosenthal left the city and ended his gambling career. He never admitted any wrongdoing, once invoking the Fifth Amendment more than 35 times in a 1961 Senate hearing on gambling and organized crime...

...track “Namer.” On eighth track “Golden,” the overall sound lends itself more to that of the traditional music of China, with the pentatonic motifs and Chinese instrumentation. The album’s closer, “From Stardust to Sentience,” wraps up the story nicely. Lyrically, this song is by far the most profound, yet at the same time the most gratifying. Pearson sings: “Millions of forces of physics and providence / Teamed up and brought us all here / Waking and sleeping...
