What is it that keeps them going? What inspires those guys who stare enviously at a patch of bench or the ones who'll never even dress for the J.V. scrimmage? Oh, they'll tell you it's for "the love of the game," or some other well-bandied phrase, but a more perceptive eye sees right through that centennial helmet--right down to that last big game, that vestige of glory--the previous senior year...

Alas, the moral of both my dream and this national saga is that there are no bannisters in ivory towers. Cambridge academics have turned a cold stare on the flight of this sport, and thus in the vestibules of academe--where bannister-sliding should indeed have flourished--students trudge on from class to class. The more optimistic hoped at the beginning of the decade that in this university--where great minds had already solved the Konigsberg Bridge problem and Zeno's Paradox--scholars might by now have found a way to slide up bannisters. ...stop a moment to watch as these college students eddy around you like so many ants in a hill. You are standing in front of the cabinet for Soc Sci 15 and casually pick up a text on behavioral psychology. Graphs of response rates and reinforcements and contingencies stare out at you, but your puzzlement is allayed by the almost tangible presence of laboratory walls enveloping you. A symphonic blend of pigeon cooing fills your ears as you walk to put pellets of feed in place for a new experiment. The smell is a bit overpowering, but this anticipation...
