...single film can tell the whole story of an organization as stark as Sicily and as Byzantine as the stock market. Instead, The Brotherhood concentrates on the microcosmic death struggles of a single Mafioso family. Frank Ginetta (Kirk Douglas) is the son of a deceased "soldier" of Murder Inc. days. Like his father, Frank still kills in the same old way, ordering a stool pigeon shot in a New Jersey dump, then stuffing his mouth with a symbolic canary. But Frank's college-educated brother Vince (Alex Cord) has acquired new credit cards of identity...

...Peking airport and made them crawl under portraits of Mao Tse-tung; now these Soviet citizens are returning. A recent complaint to India over an attack on the Chinese embassy in New Delhi was stern but matter-of-fact, and there was no counter-demonstration in Peking-in stark contrast to 1967, when at least twelve foreign embassies were besieged by Red Guards at one time or another. ...relaxed manner and cheerfulness of the astronauts during lunar orbit was in stark contrast to their mood early Tuesday morning when Apollo was approaching the moon. As time neared for the mission's most important decision-whether to allow the spacecraft simply to whip around the moon and head back toward earth or to fire the Service Propulsion System (SPS) engine and place the craft in orbit-both the astronauts and their Houston controllers fell strangely silent. Only essential voice communications were exchanged, and these were monosyllabic and tension-filled...

Tamara Long, as the slinky heavy, brandishes a flaming Morganitic torch for her Mister Man, and Sally Stark, as Ruby's peroxided pal, belts a note almost as plangent as the great Merman's. The comic delight of the show, though, is Bernadette Peters, whose Ruby can simultaneously sing and dance up a storm that puts all New York (including Queen Mane of Rumania) at her feet. She can also lament her unrequited love with a tear that streaks mascara down her cheek in a lugubrious perfection of timing...
