...movie not only plays wonderfully, it looked gorgeous. From the stark isolation of the mountainous orphanage and the gray and white sterility of its interior to the rolling shores of the coast and the vast stretches of the apple farms, the movie is set against a stunning landscape. Director Lasse Hallstrom (What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Something to Talk About, Abba: The Movie) strikes a balance between the dourness of the orphanage with the optimism of the coast, while not letting the movie get too caught up in either locale...

When it comes to viewing any Gilbert and Sullivan production, it is essential not to take the proceedings too seriously. If you're out for a night of stark realism or harrowing psychological drama, engagements in town will better suit your palate. Such qualities are mercifully absent in the entire cycle of works that have come from two eminent gentlemen of British theater. Not an exception is this year's Gilbert and Sullivan Players' production of HMS Pinafore, which, in fierce (yet of course gentlemanly) competition with The Pirates of Penzance, is among the most beloved of the repertoire...
...best described as its Wal-Mart equivalent. Opened in 1914, the Bowl now has capacity for over 64,000 fans; at one point, before renovations, it could and, on occasion, did hold over 70,000. The stadium spans 12.5 acres, and its wide, flat, bowl-like design sits in stark contrast to the magnitude of the high-rising Soldiers Field in Allston. This year, as it does every odd year, Walter Camp Field at the Yale Bowl plays host to The Game. Tailgates will open as early as 9 a.m., peak closer to 11 a.m., and not die down completely...
...Missouri began almost as soon as the 1998 elections were over. For a year now, everyone has known that Gov. Mel Carnahan, a moderate Democrat, will be challenging the incumbent Sen. John Ashcroft (R-Mo.), a conservative Republican and a favorite of the Christian Coalition. With such a stark contrast between the candidates' positions, there's no question that some otherwise forgettable decisions might take on great political significance and that impartial government might fall by the wayside. Unfortunately, with such a long race, the casualties--including some very talented people--are already mounting...
