...envy of the continent. While Botswana has one of the world's highest HIV/AIDS rates - an estimated 25% of adults between 15 and 49 are infected - it also has an unusually progressive program to deal with the disease. The contrast with neighboring Zimbabwe could not be more stark, as hundreds of thousands of refugees can attest...

...continent where President Bush is more popular than anywhere else, Africans have another, more rueful reason to take note of electoral contests 10,000 miles away: the transparent and hotly contested race bears such stark contrast to recent elections in their own countries, which have been marred by opacity, vote-rigging and tribal politics. There has been widespread violence in the aftermath of Kenya's Dec. 27 poll, with the country split along tribal lines. Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times recently reported that members of Obama's Luo ethnic group are supporting him, while rival Kikuyus are vociferously...

...Reading Between the Pixels I was immediately struck by your choice of photographs in "The Great Divide" [Feb. 18]. Whether intentional or not, your portrayal of Clinton in stark black-and-white photos, juxtaposed with the much warmer color photos of Obama, had the effect of increasing the very divide your article addressed. Did Uncle Charlie really parade around the house stark naked when he got drunk that time, or did he just strip to his underwear? Did it really snow 3 ft. in half an hour during that storm last winter? It's a long way from this to imagining that you were adopted by wolves during the Holocaust, but you can sort of get what Defonseca is driving at when she says in her defense that the yarn...

...stark, unfinished office space in a gritty corner of Philadelphia along the Delaware River, Hillary Clinton supporters gathered last Sunday to plan a campaign that wasn't supposed to happen. "We cannot take anything, any area, any voter for granted," the city's newly elected mayor, Michael Nutter, told the crowd of perhaps 150. The race, he said, will be like this year's Super Bowl, in which the previously undefeated New England Patriots unexpectedly fell to the underdog New York Giants. And he means for the Pennsylvania's Clinton campaign to be the Giants. "We have our work...
