...contrast is bewildering. Some Quebecers in Canada feel confident enough to start their own nation, while literally across the St. Lawrence River, the same group--who to this day identify themselves as "French Canadian"--aren't even sure they will survive beyond the next generation. This stark contrast betrays a lot about the development of two very different systems...

...artillery shells crack outside, Ripper finally shares exactly why he has begun World War III. Under the stark black and white camera, in a hushed tone of inspiration, he tells Mandrake, "I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion, and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids." This is a man with a mission...

Playwright David Hare does. And in Racing Demon, which is visiting Los Angeles in a Royal National Theatreproduction, unfashionable form and seemingly distant subject matter are suddenly made vividly relevant. At the center of Richard Eyre's dark, stark yet ever bustling production stands (or rather slumps) the weary figure of the Rev. ...Becker is more preoccupied than ever with the inner-most matters of the heart. Most of his songs, like the sharp blues workout Cringemaker and the lithe My Waterloo, plumb tales of love gone sour. Even though Becker's melodies sometime seem stark and his voice is a mere bleat, his ear for catchy grooves gives Whack soulfulness and heft. Down in the Bottom, the CD's finest cut, chugs forward on a rhythm smart enough to make Smokey Robinson proud and maybe even cool enough to have made Charlie Parker feel like soloing. Don't ever expect the jazz...
