...self-proclaimed "wildlife zoologist" specializing in chiroptera (which she is careful to explain means "bats"), Dina Meyer's Dr. Sheila Casper makes one believe that it is in fact possible to receive a doctorate via mail order. Meyer (of Starship Troopers fame) is laughable as a bat-loving researcher. In one of the film's most priceless exchanges, Casper tells Sheriff Emmett Kimsey (Lou Diamond Phillips) "I could never kill a bat" because it "would go against everything that I've come to believe in." This attitude lasts until one of the little darlings gets caught in her hair...

...winter months. At that same screening, you might also have noticed a conspicuous lack of substance in these preview slots. One, hyping an animated feature called Titan A.E. simply featured Matt Damon voicing over images of a futuristic Earth being attacked by vicious bug-like creatures ripped off from Starship Troopers. Another, for the aforementioned Anna and the King was no less grandiose, featuring sweeping scenes of tropical jungles, ornate palaces and royal processions. Unfortunately, like Titan, Anna was similarly vague in it's promises -- it looked damn gorgeous to be sure, but was scant in dealing out specific details...

Lucas started a quest in Hollywood for the magic of childhood. Sometimes that quest was successful. Without Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo, there would be no Indiana Jones. Sometimes it was not. Without stormtroopers there would have been no Starship Troopers. But successful or not, that mad attempt to find the stuff of childhood and put it in a bottle defined much of the movie scene for the past 20 years...
