Branson's operation will start by addressing carbon emissions from a significant but little-known source that is not covered by any national or international regulations: global marine shipping. The massive container ships that ply the ocean lanes are the backbone of globalization, but they are also carbon hogs. Each year, about 100,000 ships contribute some 1.3 billion tons of CO2 to the atmosphere, about 3% of global carbon emissions. In addition, ships spew out huge amounts of traditional air pollutants, like nitrous oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx), and emit black carbon soot, a leading contributor to melting...
...vastly reduce emissions of SOx, NOx and black carbon. Older and more polluting ships will need to be replaced by models that are more efficient, and eventually carbon-based bunker fuels will need to be swapped out for low-carbon alternative fuels. The Carbon War Room is looking to start the process by compiling information about which ships and lines are most efficient, and then pressing shipping companies - and the customers who depend on them - to use companies that have adopted the best practices...
...implications of a fresh start, the commencement of 2009 was unable to shed the atmosphere of financial doom and gloom that persisted from the previous year. In March, Harvard announced that the payout from the endowment would decline by 8 percent in dollar value for the fiscal year ending in June 2010, and projected another 8 percent fall from 2010 to 2011. The news came as a surprise, especially since it marked a significant departure from expectations in the previous fall for scenarios ranging from a flat payout to a 2 percent decline in dollar value. In September, Harvard announced...
...years since the Crimson appeared in the NCAA tournament. But thanks to senior guard Jeremy Lin, that streak could end this year. Lin, who tops Harvard in points (18.1 per game), rebounds (5.3), assists (4.5) and steals (2.7), has led the team to a 9-3 record, its best start in a quarter-century. Lin, a 6 ft. 3 in. slasher whose speed, leaping ability and passing skills would allow him to suit up for any team in the country, has saved his best performances for the toughest opponents: over his past four games against teams from the Big East...
...timing of the movie's release, at the start of an election year, is also controversial. The opposition, still looking bland and disorganized, is worried it could be one more glamorous nail in its coffin. Lula is determined to have his handpicked successor, Dilma Rousseff, elected, and a feature film starring him as a sainted everyman can only add to his appeal and help Lula bring her vital votes in the October election...
