...Potter film adaptations, after a subpar start in late 2001, have grown in richness and power until, in aggregate, they stand close to the summit of multipart movies - more sprawling if less artistically ambitious than The Lord of the Rings, more consistently intelligent though less original than the six Star Wars films. By the time the series is completed with a two-part telling of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, due to open in November 2010 and July 2011, its release cycle will be nearly as long as the 10 years Rowling took to publish her books. ...deepest kinship, man to boy, is Dumbledore's with Harry. From the start, when the dean of wizards puts a protective arm around Harry, to the probing trips they take through time and space, Dumbledore is Harry's true godfather - a role into which the great Gambon pours his craggy majesty and cello voice. One might wish that their visit to Voldemort's cave had the shuddering poignancy it does in the book, where a weakened Dumbledore tells his protégé, "I am not worried, Harry. I am with you." ...recovery will rest on its ability to hold on to customers or win over new ones. That's no small task, as GM has been forced to skimp on cash for engineering during its yearlong financial crisis. Even so, GM is off to a good start with its new Camaro, which shows signs of becoming a runaway hit. According to Ed Peper, the general manager of the Chevrolet division, which accounts for 70% of the new GM's total sales, Chevy dealers already have 25,000 orders for the Camaro, making it the hottest car GM has rolled...
...while the stimulus plan may eventually reach its goal, a look at the paper Romer and Bernstein wrote back in January shows that at least for now, the stimulus plan is at best off to a slow start. The two economists did say in the report that they expect the bulk of the jobs created by the stimulus to happen in 2010 and 2011. Nonetheless, the report says that even by the middle of this year, the stimulus bill would have a positive effect on the unemployment rate. Without the stimulus, the two economists predicted, the unemployment rate would rise...
...Funding is another issue. The European Commission has promised $350 million from the E.U.'s $7 billion economic-stimulus fund to jump-start the project, and the European Investment Bank has said it is prepared to finance up to a quarter of the pipeline's cost, about $3 billion. But with other private and public sources hesitating to commit, Nabucco's future is still in doubt...
