PARIS: A bomb ripped through a commuter train during the heart of rush hour in a French subway station Tuesday evening, killing at least two people and injuring 80 others. Seven of those wounded are said to be in "very serious" condition. According to state-run France Info radio, the blast occurred at 6:05 p.m. at the underground Port-Royal station, which serves the RER regional line. French Prime Minister Alain Juppe, who arrived on the scene soon after the blast, said no one has yet claimed responsibility, but suspicion immediately fell upon Algerian militants who had claimed responsibility...
Except for making the deficit a top priority, Auer is a liberal. A native of Germany with first-hand experience of a state-run health-care system, he supports universal health care, wants defense-spending cuts and thinks gays should be allowed to serve in the military. But after losing to Marge Roukema by 52 points in 1994, Auer is an underdog, especially in this Republican district...
BEIJING: Still fuming over a disputed U.S. home run which helped deprive the Chinese Olympic softball team of the gold medal on Tuesday, a state-run Chinese newspaper sternly recommended "thorough self criticism" for the United States. The paper blames the U.S. for Saturday's bombing attack, and attributes the low Chinese medal count to a litany of complaints, including what they claim to be small rooms and lousy food for the athletes, late buses, and even an errant fire alarm that rousted the Chinese swim team out of bed before dawn one day, interrupting an all important good night...
Yeltsin also had problems with his regular TV coverage, even though he essentially controlled the state-run networks. As late as March, the news shows continued to criticize the President mercilessly, a favorite target being the war in Chechnya. "It was ludicrous to control the two major nationwide television stations and not have them bend to your will," says Dresner. In writing, the team adopted a more diplomatic tone. "Wherever an event is held," they wrote, "care should be taken to notify the state-run TV and radio stations to explain directly the event's significance and how we want...
...good politician, Zyuganov knew how to take care of his constituents. Valeri Yermikov, a lanky sports trainer who played volleyball with Zyuganov at the institute, recalls how he later endured nine years on a waiting list for a telephone line at his new apartment. Finally he petitioned the state-run phone company but was rudely rebuffed. On that very day, Yermikov ran into Zyuganov, who at the time was Oryol's top party functionary. "Why do you look so sad?" Zyuganov inquired. Yermikov recounted his troubles. A few days later, without any explanation, his phone was installed...
