Fibers have enormous advantages over wires. Because they do not "leak" light as copper wires "leak" electricity, fibers should eliminate the cross talk and static that can occur when one telephone wire spills some of its signal into a neighboring line. Measuring as little as one-thousandth of an inch in diameter, the fibers are also far less bulky than wires -an important consideration in cities, where underground cable conduits are already overcrowded. Eventually, the fibers may also prove cheaper. Supplies of copper are limited; silicon, the chief ingredient of glass fiber, is one of the most plentiful materials...
While Three Trapped Tigers is hilarious, Vista del Amanecer, published in 1974, is a grimly serious book, soaked with desperate humor. It is a collection of short pieces, meditations on images in Cuban history, few of them more than a page long. Each vignette presents a static scene or a brief incident. For the colonial period, they describe engravings: conquistadores meeting Indians, bloodhounds catching a runaway slave. For modern times, many of them comment on photographs: a revolutionary commander, terrorists dead in a ditch. At worst, these pieces resemble Reader's Digest fillers, but at their best they are epiphanies...
...Museum of Comparative Zoology is the whale supports, the great iron turnbuckles that disappear with Melvillean inscrutability into the ceiling and are anchored somewhere high up in the attic. Two floors below, the skeletons of the leviathans are stretched out for the length of the exhibit room in static mimicry of their aquatic postures. The problem with the whale supports, says M. Edith Rutzmoser, who works out of the mammal department as curatorial associate, is that they get in the way when you're trying to move cases of specimens or open the venerable glass cases that are filled with...
Marchais' display of political independence was apparently inspired by the French Communists' poor showing in the polls. They took a drubbing in recent parliamentary by-elections; popular support has held at a static 15% to 20%, while the Socialists have made significant gains. So have the Italian Communists, who now have the backing of more than 30% of the Italian people and are closing in on the long-dominant Christian Democrats. Marchais has been impressed by the popular appeal of the low-keyed, pragmatic approach of the Italian party's Secretary-General Berlinguer. In order to allay...
...thirsty Japan only two years ago. Total oil exports this year are estimated at 70 million bbl. By 1980, oil shipments abroad are expected to reach 350 million bbl. and amount to one-third of the country's exports. China's trade, which remained virtually static at about $4.5 billion annually through the long years of isolation, jumped to $6 billion in 1972 and reached $13.7 billion...
