Linda Godwin and Michael "Rich" Clifford are the first American astronauts to perform space walk outside of a Russian space station. This morning's walk outside of Mir was the first NASA spacewalk outside a space station since 1974. Godwin and Clifford attached cosmic dust catchers, paint samples and other materials to Mir. The space agency says the six astronauts on board are not in danger, but the shuttle's planned five-day docking with Russian space station Mir may have to be shortened. Caterpillar Inc., which makes engines for GM, said it will temporarily lay off 115 workers. President Clinton, meanwhile, told a Louisiana radio station that it was too early to resort to federal mediation to settle the strike.
