Although everyone talks about the perjury trap that Ken Starr's grand jury holds for the President, the confession trap is just as big a hazard. Still, Hatch's offer has been gaining steam in both parties all week, so much so that the White House put some questions into its weekly poll to test it. Fruitlessly, I suspect, since those polled will inevitably overestimate their capacity for forgiveness...

That mea culpa would take some of the drama and steam out of the Aug. 17 appearance. It would affect public opinion, which would affect congressional opinion, which would affect the chances for impeachment and possibly Starr's own calculations. If any President has the communication skills to pull off this high-wire act, Clinton does. But that assumes that he and his wife could muster the will to set aside their loathing of Ken Starr long enough to ask for his mercy...

Unfortunately, after the Beast's sweet surrender, the energy level never reaches its full steam again. Gaston and the townspeople's invasion of the castle is good for a few cheap laughs and a Wagner leitmotif (all you good "Lit and Arts B-55: Opera" students should be able to recognize which one) but runs low on special effects. The Beast's metamorphosis dazzles everyone but stands as the last captivating moment of the show. Finally, as the orchestra swells to a passionate finish as the now-human cast waltzes around the stage...nothing happens. The curtain falls, the cast...
