Last week, while Hialeah was going full blast, a third track, Gulfstream Park, opened at seaside Hollywood, 15 miles north of downtown Miami. Its owner, wee-mustached, dimpled Jack Horning, 28-year-old heir to a Pittsburgh steel fortune, had never intended to own a racetrack. A contractor by trade, he had seen only three horse races in his life when he was hired by Promoter Joe Smoot last winter to build a racing plant on 190 acres of marshland...

Last week on opening day, when free tickets were broadcast, 15,000 spectators turned out. The rest of the week, while the stables were filled to capacity, a comparative handful of customers rattled around in Gulfstream's big steel grand stand. Young Jack Horning, who had sunk $1.400,000 in the venture, wondered if the racing commission's first thought had not been best. It was. After four days Gulfstream Park closed. With an estimated shortage of 2,000 houses in and around the Clairtown area, the building firm of Gilbert-Varker, Inc. persuaded Big Steel to cooperate in erecting a 300-house, 92-acre subdivision known as Colonial Village. FHA got behind 80% of the project's $1,314,000 total cost, local investment bankers did the rest. Costing $4,200 to $4,800 each, the houses use as much as 7,000 lbs. of steel, compared to the 2,380 Ibs. in the usual small dwelling...

...Norwegian whalers, Norsk Telefunken Radioaktieselskap last week turned up a neat new wrinkle: a battery-powered radio transmitter sealed in a steel drum attached to a lance which is hooked to the floating carcass after a whale has been killed by harpooners in small boats. It will broadcast on the 600-to-800-metre band an automatically recurring signal so that a mother ship with a direction-finding receiver can track down and recover the catch. Since few household radio receivers tune much higher than 560 metres, the chances of an ordinary radio listener tuning in a dead whale will...
