...architects still defined themselves largely in terms of European models, whether of "traditional" art or of Modernism. But the decade also saw the emergence of a genius of American design who was perhaps the greatest architect of the century: Frank Lloyd Wright. The decade's supreme collective artifact, in steel and stone, was, of course, Manhattan itself, with its immense towers--Chrysler, Empire State and the rest--rising like blasts of congealed and shining energy from the bedrock, a spectacle of Promethean ambition and daring...
First came the motorcycle outriders, then jeeps, trucks and buses crammed with grim, steel-helmeted East German troops. Rattling in their wake were the tanks--squat Russian-built T-34s and T-54s. At each major intersection, a platoon peeled off and ground to a halt, guns at the ready. The rest headed on for the sector border, the 25-mile frontier that cuts through the heart of Berlin like a jagged piece of glass. As the troops arrived at scores of border points, cargo trucks were already unloading rolls of barbed wire, concrete posts, wooden horses, stone blocks, picks...
Every week the story has tried to find its muse: at first it felt like Sophocles, a tale of charges so dangerous that a second presidency in a generation might go up in flames; later it belonged to Danielle Steel, all heavy breathing and valentines, and by turns Dickens (Who else could have invented the bottom-feeding Mr. Drudge and the nosy Ms. Tripp?) and John le Carre (Starr is now investigating the White House for investigating Starr's investigation of the White House). Last week the City of Fear went completely haywire. A town of people who like...
Store employees have no opinions of the eclectic inventory. Blodgett listlessly declares in a dull monotone, "It makes no difference to me." Further questions send her into retreat behind the "Employees Only" full-gauge double steel door in the corner of the store. Then she talks to the overlord they call "the manager," (an investigation of Blodgett's workplace during her absence reveals a small black box with hundreds of blinking lights, each possibly representing the heartbeat of a co-worker) and essentially disappears...
This jungle of twisted steel obscures the smallside door entrance that opens onto a rickedystaircase. The staircase climbs past a signindicating the availability of the daily racingform, past the body-shop's accounting office andfinally into the pool room at the top of thebuilding. Seven thinly-felted tables are crammedinto this rectangular box, with windows on theleft side overlooking the repairmen below. Sully's1996 "Best-of Boston" award, which seems to havebeen photocopied and posted so that a copy isvisible from every location in the building, isfor "Best Neighborhood Bargain Billiards," andit's well-deserved--it's hard to imagine...
