...been elegantly remedied by the release of this, the first of four Watson retrospective CDs. The handsome package and excellent liner notes show due appreciation for Watson's legacy, but even in a brown paper wrapper this collection would be essential for anyone with an interest in acoustic steel-string guitar. Aficionados will regret the omission of the classic "Beaumont Rag," but flatpicking touchstones such as "Black Mountain Rag" and "Salt River" and the dazzling fingerpicking of "Doc's Guitar" demonstrate the power and control that put Doc Watson in the most rarefied of company...
...German authorities, who by the account in "One Day in September" could arguably be held at least partly responsible for the athletes' deaths. With no SWAT team to call on, they assemble an unfortunate-looking squad of volunteer policemen disguised as athletes, except that the World War II-era steel helmets and submachine guns undo any camouflage effect created by their gaudy Adidas track suits, and put them into position to storm the Israelis' besieged compound. They call off the raid at the last moment, and only then realize that the gunmen had been watching them get into position...
Back in the 1970s, when the 55-m.p.h. speed limit was established, U.S. tiremakers were introducing steel-belted radials--now standard on most American cars, including the Ford Explorers. Nylon caps are widespread in Europe and other parts of the world, but with U.S. speed limits set low, most experts believed they weren't necessary in America...
...Unable to move forward, the bears turn left and continue walking right into town, arriving emaciated and hungry. To reduce unscheduled encounters between townspeople and the carnivores, natural-resource officer Wade Roberts and his deputies tranquilize the bears with a dart gun, temporarily house them in a concrete-and-steel bear "jail" and move them 10 miles north. In years with a late freeze--most years since the late 1970s--the number of bears captured in or near town sometimes doubles, to more than...
...Cube, landing this month in a computer store near you, is an 8-in. block of brushed steel encased in transparent, light-catching plastic. With silver wires feeding it from beneath, it looks like a floating digital brain, and certainly qualifies as an objet d'art. When I wasn't gawking at my test model, I was groping it. I had to pluck the motherboard-and-hard-drive core from its housing just to make sure there weren't any dilithium crystals hidden within (instant disassembly is one of the Cube's neater features...
