...when Indian Muslims demanded a homeland all their own. "Pakistan Day" fell last Monday, and, as is traditional, the celebrations included a splashy military parade outside the capital city of Islamabad that tied up most of the Pakistan air force. This year, however, the festivities carried a steep price. With 72 Pakistani bomber and fighter planes diverted for a ceremonial flyover, the Soviet-backed Afghan air force took advantage of the security breach and struck three villages just inside Pakistan's northwestern border, where more than 1 million Afghan refugees live. At least 181 people were killed, and 200 others...
...Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the beast of the roads, is again growling at the head of the pack. Four years ago, the sole remaining U.S. motorcycle manufacturer was skidding toward bankruptcy and was saved only because the Government slapped a steep tariff on big Japanese bikes. After a swift comeback, the Milwaukee-based firm was able last week to make an unprecedented move: it asked the Administration to drop the tariff. "When we needed help, the Government gave it to us, but we didn't need it anymore," said Vaughn L. Beals, Harley-Davidson's chairman...
...cold Dixie beer. Judging by the high price of Maui chips (as much as $7.59 for a 7-oz. bag), Hawaiians like heavy grease -- as do certain Angelenos. Jurgensen's, a high-toned Southern California grocery, buys all it can get of these dark, oily chips. The steep price does not discourage devotees like Andrea Sharp, a Los Angeles waitress. "I'm not sure what it is, but every time I eat them, I think of Hawaii," she says. Maui has inspired knockoffs, and some of the imitations, such as the parchment-crisp Laura Scudder's, made in California...
Chrysler's outlay for AMC, including a proposed $4-a-share purchase of stock from other shareholders, is expected to be at least $1.1 billion. That could be a steep price to pay for a company that lost $91 million last year on sales of $3.5 billion. But Iacocca has coveted several valuable AMC assets. Among them: AMC's popular Jeep division, which sold a record 207,514 vehicles last year; a new Renault auto-assembly plant in Canada built for $340 million but now worth an estimated $800 million; and AMC-Renault's 1,472 North American dealerships...
Time stands still in Canyoncito for a few precious seconds until Bridey calls down to Vicki, "He's O.K., he's O.K. I see him. He's coming back -- he ran after the train." Enter Sandino, performance star. He comes zooming down from an overpass, jumps a steep embankment, caroms mightily through the creek, stutter-steps around some sage and leaps onto Vicki. Vicki hugs her dog. The train is gone; the land is quiet again...
