Last week Cousins and Helmsman Robert Kagan testified. Both maintained that they had followed Hazelwood's orders to steer the ship back into an outgoing sea-lane from which it had been diverted to avoid floating ice. But Cousins charged that Kagan had failed to turn the helm sharply enough to bring the ship promptly to its new course, and that was why the Valdez plowed into a reef it should have missed by two miles. ...want them to stick me with Rocky," Douglas told David Letterman. Still, this mild man from Columbus is stuck with a hero's biography. His father Bill was a sparky middleweight who funneled his dreams into young Buster. Yet consumers have no great expectations of resurgent U.S. growth this year: 64% think conditions will stay the same, while only 14% see an improvement, and 20% expect things to get worse. One concern is unemployment: 60% of those polled think U.S. joblessness, which remained at 5.3% in December...

...talk to Ted Turner about business today, and he will probably steer the conversation into something closer to his heart. Like the folly of spending $300 billion a year on defense: "I think we can get by easily with a $75 billion military budget. These bombers and all of this stuff is an absolute waste of money and a joke." Or industrial pollution: "We get more information every day that toxic poisons are a greater threat to us than anyone ever thought. Intelligent people now know that we are really in trouble." Or East-West relations: "Gorbachev has probably moved...
