...phony, and the state is overrun with wacky spiritual advisers? There's something unfocused and Californian about I Feel Earthquakes, which made me keep referring to the front flap to be reminded of what, exactly, the book is supposed to be about. It's pleasant enough, but as Gertrude Stein said of her hometown (it was Oakland, Calif.), "There's no there there...
...Foundation (YAF), a Herndon, Va., organization, founded in 1969, that sponsored 200 conservative lectures across the country last year (in addition to the National Conservative Student Conference). At many schools, those speeches have become the biggest events of the semester. Last year at Duke, for instance, YAF speaker Ben Stein, an ex--Nixon aide and former Comedy Central host, attracted 1,500 people, 200 of whom had to be turned away--a bigger crowd than the one that had come to hear Maya Angelou two months earlier. Five years of perfect dual races came to an end in the Stein Cup, as Harvard suffered a heartbreakingly close, one-seat loss to the Bears. The Crimson had come from behind to erase an early Brown six-seat lead and even take a three-seat advantage of its own, but Brown made a surge of its own at the last possible moment...
...Joel Stein's "Meet the other 100" gave me a great idea: to make a list of the people who matter most to me. I wish I had started that list a long time ago. At my age, 75, not everyone on my list is alive today, which is regrettable. I never took the trouble to tell a high school teacher or a business mentor or a beloved grandfather what a significant influence each had on my life. I urge young people to make a list every 10 years and make sure you take the time to tell those people...
