...good friend, a fine scholar, a generous teacher," President Neil L. Rudenstine said in a statement. "When I first met him in the early 1960s, he was encouraging graduate students and junior faculty members to view the Fogg as a place to pursue their interest in [for example] Frank Stella, Jackson Pollock, Anthony Caro, and Kenneth Noland--as well as in the Mannerists, in 20th-century photographers, and in Dutch and Flemish print makers. This wise eclectic spirit nurtured the Museum, and infused the Department, in a way that allowed individuals and the University to flourish together...
...novel, has the convincingly seedy look--almost the dank smell--of Liverpool after World War II. Even a visiting theater troupe seem tired and tatty under their gaudy makeup. With baths a luxury, the locals can afford only to dream. That, at least, is the route taken by young Stella (Georgina Cates, in an affecting star debut), who joins the troupe and falls in love with its dashing director (Grant). Daughter STELLA MCCARTNEY, who's graduating from a London design school this year, already knows enough about fashion to persuade friends NAOMI CAMPBELL, Kate Moss and Yasmin Le Bon to wear her clothes in a student show for parents and industry types. Her collection, described by one critic as "part Penny Lane, part Rita, Meter Maid," must have satisfied the paparazzi, who stomped out as soon as her segment was over...
...sense of the Kowalski's home with minimal fuss. On side of the stage supports a grainy two-story photograph of a typical French Quarter house, which contains the entrance to the Kowalski's apartment, as well as the neighbors' window to which Stanley offers his infamous anguished prayer, "Stella!" The other is devoted to the apartment, accurately sketched through concise set decoration and attention to period accessories. Heidi Curran's costumes (notably Blanche's, from a chic Brattle Street boutique) further locate the piece in time and place...
