...investors who bought in at the original price would have gained 77% on average if they held the stock for up to five years. By contrast, the University of Chicago business-school survey also found that second-day buyers could expect returns of 58%--a less than stellar performance since the S&P index of 500 stocks rose 78.5% over the same period. Warns William Benedetto, who heads the New York City investment banking firm Benedetto Gartland & Greene, which helps raise money for start-ups: "The individual investor should not be in the high-tech IPO market, period." ...book offers candid assessments of the show's less stellar moments as well. Koppel, we learn, never liked the idea of doing a show on comedian John Belushi's death--especially when the only show-biz "friend" of his the show managed to book was Milton Berle. Koppel's choice for the all-time worst Nightline is a 1985 interview with Le Duc Tho, in which the former North Vietnamese negotiator rattled on interminably (as fellow guest Henry Kissinger fumed) because his interpreter refused to convey Koppel's desperate efforts to stop him. Ammonia was discovered in interstellar space more than 25 years ago, which makes it plausible, according to one of the scientists on the Illinois team, that molecules of ammonia and acetic acid linked up to form basic amino acid. Amino acids, which are the basic...

The action was all the more unexpected because other companies have amassed even larger shares of their respective markets without government eyebrows being raised (see chart). But Justice is said to be looking hard at Frito-Lay's use of shelf allowances, a common retailing practice in which...
