...buzz has recently hit the summer's big grownup drama, Steven Spielberg's The Terminal, and the big grownup comedy, The Stepford Wives. Stepford endured lots of rewriting, reshooting and trimming to a terse 93 min. In other words, the film--a remake of the 1975 thriller about "perfect" suburban women who turn out to be robots--underwent the same radical makeover, the same behavioral modification, as the wives of Stepford. And with the same goal: to make it prettier and more pleasing. As for the Spielberg film, in early June the Internet cinephile site Ain't It Cool News...
...case of Buzz v. Stepford, yes, the movie is a little messy. But that's forgivable, since it has a wonderfully wounding malice directed at both the Stepford, Conn., contingent of Energizer Bunny wives and the New Yorkers who have just moved in. Joanna Eberhart (Nicole Kidman), a just-fired network boss, wears black to the town's July 4 picnic. "Only high-powered castrating Manhattan bitches wear black," she is told. The guards at Houghton all but frisk you when you emerge from viewing its rare books, Widener is haunted by scowling academes, Lamont is crowded with a Boschian assortment of your drowsing or deadline-crazed classmates?...
Although Teresa has made countless campaign stops like this--having twice been married to lanky, blue-blooded, Yale-educated Senators named John--very little about her fits the stereotype of the political wife. Not even Hillary Clinton strayed so far from the dutiful, adoring Stepford spouse as Teresa. She has the independence that comes with a personal fortune and one of the nation's biggest philanthropies, a life story that sounds like a screenplay and a bluntness that could never be scripted...
...abounded at the Dior show with 1950s-style gold gowns and Nefertiti headdresses piled high with crystals, pearls and gold-plated glamour, the stylists were thrilled by the sight of model Liya Kebede in a slick silver dress at Chanel (for Nicole, perhaps?). And they scribbled furiously as a Stepford-style Donatella look-alike in crystal-encrusted satin came down the catwalk at Versace (undoubtedly...
