What is most remarkable about Stephen Drury's direction is his refusal to classify the Hair tribe as either totally good or evil. If the adults are demons, at least the tribe is not a chorale of angels. Drury emphasizes this point at the beginning of the show, when the tribe insults and practically terrorizes the audience. These juveniles are not sweet, innocent, or even well-balanced; their parents' society has twisted them into self-centered bullies. The transformation of Shakespeare's Duke into a war-mongering politician hasn't dated since the demise of the Vietnam war. Eglamour's singing voice tends to coast out of key, and the Chinese dragon he musters to his aid is lovely...

Harry's girl friend, the staff photographer who is torn between career and romance, is well played by Lindsay Crouse. Stephen Collins is suitably slick as the ambitious book writer, and Jill Eikenberry makes a winsome receptionist-cum-presiding spirit. Some of the secondary roles blur into caricature in the writing but are still brought off with zest?notably by Jeff Goldblum as the freeloading rock critic...
