Since we are looking at rowing from a scientific point of view, let the men of the present time not only investigate the question of form, but let them go a step farther and solve a more subtle problem, the mutual effects of mind and muscle. Let them study hygiene, and be conversant with the latest hygienic discoveries. By following these suggestions, Harvard would soon become the cynosure of all rowing-men on your side of the Atlantic, and, what is of infinitely more importance, would regain and maintain her supremacy with the least possible expenditure of time and strength...
...Association, that the request will be complied with; so a change involving the possibility of obtaining a more capable man, may now with some reason be hoped for. The Directors, we understand, although fully convinced that a change was necessary, hesitated somewhat before taking so decided a step. Their delay caused very general dissatisfaction and, considering the number of men who have left the Commons during the last week, it was certainly unfortunate. It is only by marking on recitations, also, that perfect justice is done us. This system of frequent marking eliminates variable elements, and I think it would also eliminate many of the inherent evils of the partial systems, while uniting their advantages. And if this or any other is the only really right system, it ought not to be left to individual discretion to choose any of several other methods, but there should...
COMMENCEMENT this year will present a more imposing appearance than ever before. One feature of the day is now to be established which will add much to the character of the exercises. The Faculty have decided to appear in gowns. This is a step in the right direction, and we hope their example will be followed next year by the graduating class. The dress-suit is rather inappropriate for a morning costume, and the gown - the distinctive dress of scholars - is a much more fitting uniform for occasions like our Commencement. But since dress-suits have been selected this year...
