Like all the good adults on the show the doctor is stern, selfless, and knowing. He refuses the payment the Mod Squader offers. The doctor can tell what was wrong with the girl (by her symptoms no doubt), and warns, "Tell her not to take any more L.S.D. before she's twenty-one or she'll suffer permanent brain damage...

...rest of Rachel, Rachel's small cast is fine as well as suitably anoymous in character. Jerome Moross has written a score that would be more noteworthy if the themes and orchestration weren't so similar to The Big Country, for which he also wrote music. Stewart Stern's screenplay is consonant in its intelligence with Newman's direction...

Unhappily, as the book progresses, Stern slights the academy in favor of a labyrinthine exploration of Wolf's hang-ups. To the useful tale of his youth, Stern ties a string of current circumstances, including a preposterously pregnant ex-wife and a mad film director whose sole purpose is to prove that God, man and Wolf are all prisoners of their past...
