Explosive attacks on the powers that be didn't start with the Unabomber and Timothy McVeigh. In December 1905, in Caldwell, Idaho, a sagebrush railroad town near Boise, a bomb attached to a garden gate killed the state's former Governor, Frank Steunenberg. Blame for the murder was quickly pinned on traveling "sheep dealer" Harry Orchard, who confessed to being a paid assassin for the Western Federation of Miners, one of the era's most powerful labor unions. The union's highest officials were indicted, and the young Clarence Darrow hired to defend them. The result was a kind...
...helped elect William John McConnell Governor of Idaho and promptly married the Governor's daughter Mamie. Forgotten is the young attorney who in 1907 prosecuted William ("Big Bill") Haywood and two others of the Western Federation of Miners for instigating the fatal bombing of ex-Governor Frank Steunenberg. In 1907 the Idaho legislature sent him to the U. S. Senate where he has remained ever since...

The facts are that a bomb was placed at the gate opening into the lawn of the Governor's home in Caldwell. When the Governor opened the gate he was literally blown up. Harry Orchard confessed to having placed the bomb and was sentenced to prison for life...
...that trial in the newspapers of 1906 and 1907 is worth reading. The prosecution addressed 150,000 words to the jury, the defense used 250,000. Everyone rather expected Borah to win. He might have won in the end had not a man who later admitted killing Governor Steunenberg made some absurd charges against Haywood which discredited his earlier incriminations. Haywood was freed after 18 months in jail, a famous man and to all dissatisfied workmen a hero...
