The failure of this movie is largely the fault of bad direction. George Stevens has completely overdone the flashback mechanism, and his use of popular songs, to recall the associations through which the story unfolds, is too facile and backend to be excused.

But Parents Grant and Dunne cannot overcome the ten-little-fingers-and-ten-little-toes plot. Written by Scripter Morrie Ryskind, produced and directed by George Stevens (Alice Adams), it is too often a moving picture which does not move. Skillful direction saves it from turning maudlin.

Harvard hopes for its first lacrosse victory this year seemed high in both games played over the weekend, but each time when the final gun went off, the team was on the short end of topheavy scores, 9 to 3 against Stevens Institute and 12 to 1 against Army.
