In June, 1862, he became medical assistant in the employ of the United States Sanitary Commission, before Richmond, and on September 26 of the same year he enlisted as a private in the Forty-Fifth Massachusetts Volunteers. On October 28 he became hospital steward of the regiment. He was present at the battles of Kingston, S. C., Whitehall, Goldsboro, and Cove Creek, and was mustered out of service on July 7, 1863. In June, 1864, he entered the army of the Potomac as a volunteer surgeon and was stationed at the Ninth Artillery Corps...
