WASHINGTON, D.C.: A contrite Kenneth Starr announced today that his stewardship of the Whitewater investigation would not, after all, end in August. "It has become clear that for the sake of continued public confidence in this investigation, it would be inappropriate to set any arbitrary date upon which to terminate my role as independent counsel," Starr said, reading from a prepared statement. "I made a mistake," he told reporters afterward. "Setting an arbitrary date was unwise and incorrect. . .an unwise judgment on my part." Starr's announcement Monday that he would be stepping down Aug. 1 to become dean...
WASHINGTON, D.C.: Support for Newt Gingrich continued to weaken Monday as House Banking Committee Chairman James Leach said that Gingrich should step down as Speaker. Leach argued that the reputation of the Congress and Republican control of the House "are clearly jeopardized by (Gingrich's) continued stewardship of the House," adding that the GOP has to choose between "rejuvenated leadership or an ethically damaged speaker." It was Barad, a onetime cosmetics marketer and knowledgeable about the whims of fashion, who rehabilitated Barbie's image in the 1980s, recasting her into a hip toy and a global franchise for the company...

Even before their polling confirmed their suspicions, the Americans intuited that Yeltsin would lose and lose badly if the election were a referendum on his stewardship. Most Russians, the polls and focus groups found, perceived Yeltsin as a friend who had betrayed them, a populist who had become imperial. "Stalin had higher positives and lower negatives than Yeltsin," says Dresner. "We actually tested the two in polls and focus groups. More than 60% of the electorate...
...propagated by media giants to further themselves and their profits. It is impossible to request that Time Warner, et al., be concerned with something other than profits--that's what a corporation is for. Rather, it is necessary that the U.S. government ensures through anti-trust initiatives the independent stewardship of the networks and the maintenance of a free press so that democracy itself is not stifled by entertainment...
