...STEWART Journalism stars are made in times of war: Edward R. Murrow in World War II, Morley Safer in Vietnam and now, with his deskbound coverage of the fighting in Iraq, The Daily Show's Stewart. As he incessantly points out, he plays host on a fake newscast on a basic cable channel (Comedy Central), but this allows him to be critical, arch, incredulous and relevant, to the delight of viewers and the envy of many real journalists...
...finally caught a break. What Collingwood and Schlesinger--co-founders and co-songwriters of the band Fountains Of Wayne--actually did was this: they recorded a song about wanting to sleep with a friend's mother. Then they made a video with Rachel Hunter, the ex-Mrs. Rod Stewart, playing a modern Mrs. Robinson in a bikini. These are eclectic choices that would help define Moore's aesthetic--if only she had one. On Earth, Moore is bold; on Cat Stevens' Moonshadow, she is delicate; and on a particularly bad version of Blondie's One Way or Another, she even tries...
...worked for Stewart, financially at least. Having rasped his way through 2002's It Had to Be You...The Great American Songbook, an album that sold 2 million copies, Stewart got right back into his tux for As Time Goes By...The Great American Songbook: Volume II. Stewart is a master of tawdry sincerity--he's rock's best B singer--and hearing him cover A material would make for a tacky thrill if he weren't so dreadfully serious in his approach. Instead of turning in a winking version of I'm in the Mood for Love...
