...convertibles have added a spark to auto sales, most of Detroit's factories will not be in full gear until the American middle class can once again afford a new car. A break in interest rates would help, but many buyers would still be deterred by steep sticker prices. Even the cheapest Chevrolet costs $5,270. William Goff, 52, a Dearborn, Mich., telephone worker, was discouraged by what he saw last week at a GM showroom. Said he: "I can't believe that some of these cars cost more than I paid for my house." Many people...
...sometime journalist who writes a terrific novel about Boston every year or so. About tough guys in Boston, that is. There may be, somewhere in the Hub area, a Higgins test range where the writer holds trials for admission to his casts of characters. Harvard degree? Reject Dukakis bumper sticker? So long, Faneuil Hall regular? Next Higgins's novels, you see, deal exclusively with a social set in this area that has neither the inclination nor the ability to be anything other than what it is--the royalty of a seedy commercial-political religious organized crime two-bit empire...

Last week Jensen returned to his dealer's showroom to eye the new Continental, but he quickly became another victim of what Detroit calls "sticker shock." The price on the car's window: $25,692. Says he: "Damn, that is expensive! It persuaded me to keep driving my '80 until it won't go any more. Then I'm going to buy a down-sized...
...maintained that impact-resistant bumpers are not only costly to make, but so heavy that the extra weight takes miles off a car's fuel economy. General Motors contends that cutting the current standard in half, to 2.5 m.p.h. for both front and rear bumpers, would reduce the sticker price by $40 as well as save $50 to $60 in gasoline bills over the life of the car. Automakers were also cheered last week when the Administration took another deregulatory step that they have urged, and scrapped the requirement that 1983-model cars come equipped with either automatic seat...
