Even Dangerfield's silliest gags have the sting of truth. How accurate they may be about his own life is another matter. He talks about "comedic license," but whether he is doing a shotgun discourse on marriage or about growing up Jewish and poor in a section of New York City that is well-off and Waspy, he seems to be drawing from deep roots. Rodney was Jacob Cohen when the neighborhood kids had names "like Marianne and Biff." When they were on the tennis courts, he was delivering groceries. He started writing gags when...
...Frontier Room, Dixie's Shasta Room, the Pine Room and the Cozy Room were raided by a task force worthy of an Abscam sting: the FBI, U.S. marshals, the South Dakota division of criminal investigation, the South Dakota Attorney General's office and the Lawrence County sheriffs office. After state officials filed public-nuisance charges against the bordellos, 27 girls and their three poodles were taken into custody as material witnesses in a federal grand jury probe. Many will label resisters selfish, but the charge loses its sting in the light of the political selfishness that brought registration back. Those who resist a policy at high personal cost because they find it immoral and unwise are courageous next to those who legislate the fate of others for the sake of their own gain...
Others felt the real sting of political repression. Ordinary citizens are forced to play informer, Roger Arencibia, 27, a Havana dental assistant, said resentfully. "My brother-in-law was laid off from his factory and could not get another job," said Caridad Carrodeguas, a bookkeeper from Batabanó. "The factory managers want good revolutionaries. You can't complain, you can't speak out against anything openly...
