...have just destroyed -- and the soldier who bashed a man's head takes a tourist snapshot of the holocaust. More than any other film, Platoon gives the sense -- all five senses -- of fighting in Viet Nam. You can wilt from the claustrophobic heat of this Rousseauvian jungle; feel the sting of the leeches as they snack on Chris' flesh; hear all at once the chorus of insects, an enemy's approaching footsteps on the green carpet and Chris' heartbeat on night patrol. The film does not glamourize or trivialize death with grotesque special effects. But it jolts the viewer alive...

...trend is to name teams for malevolent forces, such as the Blast, Sting, Blizzard and Blitz. Three team names celebrate disasters that destroyed much of their native locale: the Golden Bay Earthquakes, Chicago Fire and Atlanta (now Calgary) Flames. So I can speak more viscerally than if I hadn't felt the sting of some of these false charges. There is this insidious suggestion that I was conducting an operation. It's untrue, unfair and totally wrong. I met Max Gomez three times and never discussed Nicaragua with him. What I did discuss was what he was doing in terms of the counterinsurgency...

...North such a wily renegade that he could in effect sting Khomeini and funnel millions to the contras without informing his superiors outside the NSC? "They knew what the guy was doing," says a North acquaintance. "How do you think a lieutenant colonel would pull off that kind of stuff?" Others are not so sure about that. "You think it's inconceivable that Ollie did all this on his own?" says a White House official with no great affection for the colonel. "Then you don't know Ollie North. He can fix you with those innocent blue eyes and tell...
