Look. Two men jitterbug their drunk way down Lansdowne Street, shreiking and twirling and smashing into hard brick walls. Their noise intrudes in this damp, silent alley; the warehouses know no human sound or stink from five p.m. to nine in the morning. The men wail deep and coo softly, as if speaking through thin silk stockings...
These are the politer ploys in what has become a rather uncivil war. Fighting fire with ire, bumper stickers declaim: KISSING A SMOKER IS LIKE LICKING A DIRTY ASHTRAY. A bellicose lapel button declares: SMOKERS STINK. Since slogans do not extinguish cigarettes, many antis become vigilantes. A scourge at some business conventions these days is a self-appointed enforcer who goes around plucking butts from smokers' mouths. One vigilante tactic: when a fellow guest lights up after dinner, an antismoker dunks his hand in the smoker's water glass. "What the...!" expostulates the smoker...
...Patrolmen's Benevolent Association accepted the layoffs, though with bitterness and threats of work slowdowns. Firemen called in sick in record numbers. The sanitation workers, with the token protest but implicit approval of their union leadership, illegally left their jobs, promising to turn New York into "Stink City" and shouting from picket lines, "Wait 'til the rats come...
