...lovely orchestral arrangement that sounds almost completely different. This is R.E.M.'s first film score, and it's pretty good--some of their most delicate, beautiful work is here, though the sadder bits get a little melodramatic. The highlight of the album is "This Friendly World," with Michael Stipe and Jim Carrey trading off on vocals and at one point singing every other word; it will be interesting, to say the least, to see how this kooky number fits into the film. Man on the Moon is a must-have for die-hard R.E.M. fans; overall, it's a pleasant...
...interpret that two different ways. Because on a more philosophical level like "who's my daddy?" I really think Michael Stipe is cool. Cool, powerful presence and in terms of like cool performance personality--in terms of a more personal level. There are a couple of really good friends who just kick my ass. Who really challenge...
...York high-rise hotel. Sometimes it was hard to tell them all apart; everyone who worked on the movie seemed to wear many proverbial hats. Plainspoken wunderkind director Spike Jonze is basking in the glow of his meaty supporting role acting in Three Kings. The producer Michael Stipe is also the frontman for R.E.M.--and, incidentally, likes to wear sparkly eyeshadow. Curlyheaded screenwriter Charlie Kaufman doubled as the executive producer of the film (and has a slew of strange projects in development). John Cusack likes to direct himself. Cameron Diaz likes to change the color of her hair...
Vintage scooterists scorn the strictly practical Hondas and Yamahas--and dub them "Tupperware." Possessing more cachet are new bikes that boast classic style but modern components, like ItalJet's Velocifero and Dragster models, favorites of Michael Stipe and Martha Stewart. ("Vintage without the repairs," says ItalJet USA's Joel Sacher.) Even these don't cut it with diehards like New York lawyer Tom Giordano. "Finding a charming, rusted-out relic and turning it into a jewel," he says, "that's a big part of the love affair...
Upon their debut in 1993 with the album Your Head is a Shimmer, produced by better known fellow Athens, Ga. resident Michael Stipe, Trinket became a touring staple at small venues in the southeast. They have evolved since then, producing a very accessible rock sound that eventually drew the attention of the executives at their current label, RCA. The result is a finished sound and inoffensively fascinating lyrics. The steady beat always drives forward, and Youmans' vocals, although not extraordinary in quality, are uniformly strong. Trinket is a band that could be on its way to something big-catch them...
