Harvard needed this celebration. We needed the opportunity to create a concrete (or, in this case, brick, stone and iron) memorial to the trailblazers of the Class of 1976, a memorial which also anticipates a renewed effort on the part of the College to strengthen the role of women. The gate dedicated Saturday now boasts two plaques, one recognizing the anniversary 25 years ago, when women first moved into the Yard, and the other quoting the seventeenth-century poet, Anne Dudley Bradstreet: "I came into this country, where I found a new world and new manners at which my heart...
...distinguish himself? Well, for starters he could paint his fingernails olive, khaki and black. And, apparently, he does. Last year Urban Decay decided to advertise its unisex grungy nail colors--"Does pink make you puke?"--in magazines with male readers, like Spin, Rolling Stone and Interview, instead of in women's magazines. The Vietnam of his mind is "waisthigh in vegetation," as Stone writes in his novel A Child's Night Dream (St. Martin's Press; 236 pages; $21.95). "Green with...
...Stone the filmmaker is always on a weird trip, is ever on the edge of wetness; that salutary quality endears him to souls more timid and judicious. It is as if we had chosen him as our Designated Liver, to be our recording angel and exemplary fool, to be the '60s adventurer, to go to Yale and war, do drugs, have sex with all classes and colors of women, to make scenes and movies, to be the gonads and guilty conscience of his generation. And if we hadn't drafted him? Then Stone, as he did for Vietnam infantry service...
