Inevitably, some semipopulist politicians have seen the value of sort-of waiting in lines with the hoi polloi. This summer Philadelphia mayor John Street waited outside an AT&T store from 3:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. before a stand-in from his office literally stood in for Hizzoner while he conducted official business. And billionaire New York mayor Michael Bloomberg often waits for the subway with his fellow citizens, though he's first driven by motorcade past the stop nearest his house to a station 22 blocks away, where the wait, or at least the ride, is shorter...

Plenty of criticism of the U.S. there. On the other hand, the famous lunch that George W. Bush stood Sarkozy in Kennebunkport, Maine, this summer seems to have been worth it. Sarkozy pledged 150 new French troops for Afghanistan and softened his opposition to Turkey's entry into the European Union, a membership the U.S. favors. In the wars his President pals waged, he stood right by their side, lending his prestige to their policies. He has helped lead the nation toward theocracy and abolishment of the constitutional separation of church and state. Perhaps more dangerous than any other encouragement of hubris, Graham has provided a model for President George W. Bush's belief that God directs his every move...

...once hailed as the third most popular Prime Minister in postwar Japan, but his recent missteps - and those of his advisers - have precipitated a rapid fall from grace. He stood behind a health minister who called women "baby making machines," a defense minister who remarked that the dropping of the Nagasaki bomb "couldn't be helped" and an agricultural minister whose suspected involvement in financial scandals led him to commit suicide. In making his goal of amending Japan's pacifist constitution to allow a more robust foreign policy the cornerstone of the LDP's July election campaign, Abe ignored voter...
