...usually the case on the Mainstage, the technical elements of “Lucie Cabrol” are lovely. The lighting, designed by Joshua Randall, casts much of the play in a dimly-lit zone, with some nice effects (the red light spilling from a wood stove, for example) that occasionally verge into gimmickry (the coffin-shaped spotlight that Lucie lies in, for example...

...Blame by Nigerian playwright Ola Rotimi, which transplants Sophocles' Oedipus Rex to Africa. He talks about his school and having to go to mass every day. He pronounces Catholic Cad-lick in his wonderful, treacle-thick Ghanaian English. There is a small table in the corner with a stove sitting on it. Pots and pans stack up under chairs that line the walls and on the shelves of a bureau that also holds a tiny color television. There is a small refrigerator, the padding in its door showing through the rust. Clothes lines crisscross beneath the plasterboard ceiling...

This didn't quite work out, since most of the food I'm offered is cooked and I'm not very good at turning down a free meal. But I made it for almost three days, during which I ate some surprisingly awesome stuff and felt pretty good, if often hungry. Plus, I saved a lot of time because I could shop in only...
